Ask the Designer: A Curtain Quandary

Saffron Marigold - Updated: February 11, 2016

What fun, Sharon is updating her kitchen! And she has some wonderful ideas to make her small space come alive.

Green Kitchen

Design Elements

Walls, flooring, countertops and cabinets have all come together beautifully, but Sharon wants curtains and a valance for her paned kitchen windows and door.

The walls are a rich sage green, the floors will be a darker wood, and the counter tops a medium to dark butcher-block with different patches of wood. The cabinets are white and it’s a small room, so I want to use color to tone down all the white. Do you think Orange Blossom would work well?

Orange Blossom Kitchen Curtain

Why, yes, I do! 🙂 I actually think this may have been my first choice for this kitchen as well. In her email, Sharon worries that she is no good at interior design, but I must differ. Sharon, you’ve done a wonderful job of bringing together natural, organic textures and tones, and of making a small space bright and cheery! Adding our Persian inspired kitchen curtains creates just the right note. For your window space, 2 curtains and 2 valances should be just about right, and will allow the curtains to have an easy, flowing look.

Orange Blossom Valance

I love your idea of skimming the top of the doorway with a beaded valance. I’m all about sunshine, and the thought of these little glass jewels sparkling in your new kitchen makes me very happy!

True Sage

Green walls in a kitchen are such a thing. I have them too! And they’re lovely in this space because they provide a serene, calm, sensibility that also speaks of growth and life. Green is also the perfect backdrop for zesty accents in orange, yellow, reds, sky blues and crisp white.

Butcher block countertops. Sigh. So gorgeous! I wish them many years of being the foundation of great meals! 🙂

Sharon, I’m so glad that with all the natural products you’ve incorporated into your kitchen, you’ve chosen to hang our hand-dyed, 100% cotton curtains alongside. I think they’ll tie the look all together, and give it a very unique, personal feeling. By the way, as you know, our Orange Blossom print has been back ordered. BUT! It’s due in at the end of this month. Happiness!
