Ask the Designer: Build a Bath Around My Mirror

Saffron Marigold - Updated: May 28, 2015

One of our customers has a fantastic, one of a kind mirror that hangs in her bath.  She wants to incorporate a Saffron Marigold shower curtain and valances, but isn’t sure which ones to choose.  I’ll offer a recommendation, as well as ideas for towels and a fresh wall color.

This fantastically unique mirror needs an equally unique space...

This mosaic-like masterpiece is bursting with color, so rather than compete with it, we’ll complement it with our rich and tranquil Pacific Blue cotton shower curtain.  The craftsmanship of our hand printed curtain will be in tune with the fine work on her mirror, and the deep indigo in our linen will sing with the vibrant blues in her piece.

I recommend a saturated red as an accent wall color behind the mirror.  This mirror is so bold that it needs a wall color strong enough to hold it.  While the current pale yellow color is fine, an exiting red wall will turn this bath into a show stopper.

The rich tones of Pacific Blue and a deep red wall would create a stunning backdrop for this vibrant mirror

Paint the remaining walls a muted ochre so that focus remains on our red wall and mirror, and drape Anthropologie’s soft “Well Versed” towels in navy over the towel bar.  Since there is a window in this bath, I would use a Pacific Blue valance.  Again, since baths are typically smaller spaces, we don’t want to overwhelm the room with too much pattern.  In this case, a matching valence and shower curtain will not be overkill, and instead they’ll lend continuity to our exotic space.

Pacific Blue valences, and soft navy towels against ochre walls round out our space...

Put it all together, and our goals are accomplished:  the mirror is showcased, and at the same time it is supported by equally unique and artistic pieces.  This bathroom is going to be majestic!

Mary's bath can be transformed into a jewel-like space.

Mary, we would love to see your space when you have put the finishing touches on it.  If you’ll take some photos, I’ll add them to the post!

Very best of luck,
