What is Kantha?
Kantha embroidery consists of a delicate running stitch. As all things crafted by hand it is imperfectly perfect, and therein lies its charm. The density of kantha embroidery makes it complex, with each quilt taking 10-20 days to complete.
How are the quilts made?
Each quilt is made using 6 layers of soft cotton: the top and bottom are vintage saris, and sandwiched between them are 4 layers of soft hand-loomed cotton fabric. The front and back of each quilt vary depending on how the saris are sewn together, so you get to enjoy two unique looks!
What makes them so special?
These hand stitched quilts are exquisite examples of kantha embroidery full of color and character. The end result is a breathtaking textured quilt of heirloom quality.
Why are we doing this?
As always, our inspiration is you, our dear customer! So many of you have asked us over the years why we don’t employ women in India.
For the most part, woodblock printing is a male-dominated field, but women rule when it comes to kantha embroidery work. We’ve teamed up with an incredible social entrepreneur who, over a career spanning decades, has positively impacted the lives of innumerable disenfranchised women and children.
We are hopeful that this partnership will make a significant impact all around: provide meaningful work to our women artisan partners, further our business with purpose mission, and offer heirloom quality quilts to our customers who help make all this happen!
