Question:
About washing & drying: I see that you recommend washing in cool water and gentle soap, but will the sheets be okay if I dry them in a dryer?
Answer:
You may wash your handcrafted linens using the cold and gentle cycle setting on your washing machine. Please do not soak the linens. Use a detergent formulated for delicate fabrics. The eco friendly ones that are available at Costco called Ecos or Seventh Generation are really good, Woolite is another good option. Do not use any detergent that contains phosphates or bleach.
It would be best to hang dry the linens. However, if this is not viable then dry them using the coolest setting on your dryer. As a part of the hand block printing process, the cotton fabric for each piece is cut significantly larger than the finished size. Each piece goes through several baths during the dyeing and printing process and as a result is substantially pre-shrunk. Pre- shrunk cotton however, is not completely immune to shrinking, especially when thrown in the dryer or washed with hot water. It won’t shrink as much as fabric that has not been pre-shrunk, but some shrinkage may still occur.
Avoid using dryer/softener sheets since they tend to coat the fibers and leave a white residue on the fabric.
The only exception to the above is the Memories of Shalimar, and Vanilla Glacé prints, which require dry cleaning because of the gold paste that is used in printing them. The surface agitation that occurs with machine washing these prints will cause the gold paste to flake significantly.
The Ivy Lace print may be machine washed and will withstand quite a few washings. However, if you are aiming for longevity then dry cleaning this print is highly recommended.
Remember these linens are handcrafted and that the entire print is hand blocked five square inches at a time, using a set of several hand-carved wood blocks, one for each color. Hence, these linens that are so exquisitely marked by the human hand must be treated with love and care, befitting a piece of living textile art. When cared for properly your Saffron Marigold linens will offer your many seasons of joy and pleasure.
