How to Measure Your Bed & Mattress for the Best Summer Bedspread Fit

Saffron Marigold - Updated: November 5, 2021

Our lightweight bedspreads, sometimes known as summer bedspreads or Indian bedspreads, aren’t your standard bedspreads. For starters, each one is block printed by hand with designs intended to bring you on a journey to places real or imagined. In other words, each handmade bedspread is a functional work of art.  Beyond their beauty, however, a Saffron Marigold lightweight bedspread is indeed light in weight.

This guide will help you make sure that our bedspreads are right for your needs. If you’re looking for a traditional coverlet (i.e. quilted or mid-weight spreads that cover the entire bed and go all the way to the floor), then you might find our bedspreads too lightweight or small for your needs.

How to measure your bed for a bedspread

Measure and jot down the following measurements:

  • height of bed
  • size and thickness of mattress
  • and the fabric drop you want for the top, bottom & sides of the bed.

You may want to consider buying a slightly larger bedspread because cotton is prone to shrinking, especially if subjected to high temperature washing & drying. With that in mind, even though our pre-shrunk cotton bedspreads undergo multiple rounds of washing, it’s still important to follow the wash and care instructions provided.

Our finished bedspreads are sized as follows (all measurements in Inches):

  • King Bedspreads: 90″ height, 108″ width
  • Queen Bedspreads: 90″ height, 90″ width
  • Twin Bedspreads: 90″ height, 70″ width

How our lightweight bedspreads fit

Below are illustrations on how our bedspreads fit. All of these assume your bed and mattress are standard size (i.e. 7″ thick mattress, 18″ tall from the top of the mattress).

Twin bedspread over a twin mattress

Twin mattress: 39″ x 75″
Mattress thickness: 7″
Bed height from Mattress top: 25″
Finished bedspread size: 70″ x 90″
Overhang top & bottom: 7.5
overhang sides: 15″

A standard twin bed is 75″ long, and our twin bedspreads are 90″ long, so you’ll have a generous drop on the sides and overhang at the top and bottom.

Queen bedspread over a queen mattress

Queen mattress: 60″ x 80″
Mattress thickness: 7″
Bed height from Mattress top: 25″
Finished bedspread size: 90″ x 90″
Overhang top: none
Overhang bottom: 20″
Drop at sides: 15″

As you can see in the illustration below, you will need pillows to cover the top part of your bed. This size will work beautifully if you prefer a bed with a layered look and pillows. However, if you want your lightweight bedspread to cover the entire bed including the pillows, then this size won’t work.
