Ask the Designer – Help me pick dining room curtains that will go best with the adjacent kitchen

Saffron Marigold - Updated: July 1, 2014

Its time to wear our designer hat today and help Melanie decide what curtains would work best for her dining room. This is what Melanie asked us:

Melanie Smith:

“I can’t decided what curtains would go best with my kitchen … The curtains are for my dining room. If I go with the lighter print then I would white wash the fire place.”

Melanie is looking for curtains for her dining room. But since her dining room opens up to her kitchen, she wants to make sure her choice ties in with her kitchen decor too. These are pictures she sent us of her dining room below.

Melanie – I love your open kitchen/dining room plan. I can just see how all your guests must congregate in the kitchen like in most homes, and you’re lucky you have the space for that.

Here are a couple of pictures of the kitchen which is bright and airy, with a wonderful blue paint on the walls and creamy white cabinets. A great canvas to work against.

The brick fireplace is a lovely feature and I would hate for that to be painted over. That along with the almost distressed pine furniture lends itself to an informal, almost French country style of decor. Those combined with the terracotta ceramic tile flooring, the blue walls and the white cabinets are the inspiration for the 3 options I have chosen below. The collages should give you a good idea of how all the elements will work and look together, including suggestions for accessories.

Option 1: Spice Route curtains will bring warmth, color and vibrancy

Spice Route curtains are almost tailor made for your dining area. The deep reds and oranges highlight the brick and the flooring, the blue colors within the motifs are enhanced by the blue on the walls, the creamy cabinets offset the vibrant color and tie into the neutral hues in the print, the warmth of the print mirrors the warm wood furniture. The curtains bring a little global style and flavor and will tie in all the elements of the two rooms. If you like color and pizazz, this print wuld be stunning.

Accessorize with artwork and accessories that highlight the mysterious, exotic feel of the print.

Option 2: Morning Dew curtains for style and elegant French flair

Morning Dew curtains will bring a completely different vibe to your dining room. With yellow and blue motifs on pale yellow it will be elegant and charming. A great print for a decor aesthetic that combines Shabby Chic comfort with French country élan, the print will enhance the light, bright airy feel of the adjacent kitchen. The blue and teal accents on the pattern will complement your blue walls, the creamy cabinets echo the pale yellow of the print, the brick and terracotta flooring highlight the feel and evoke visions of rustic country Mediterranean living!

Accessorize with earthy pottery and ceramics for French country magic.

Option 3: Chasing Butterflies curtains for color, cheer and comfort

Chasing Butterflies curtains combine warmth, color and style, all in one cheerful happy print. It will be a never ending summer in your home with the luscious fruit colors. The raspberry and melon colors coordinate with the earth colors of the brick and the kitchen flooring, the creamy milky background complements the kitchen cabinets,  and the relaxed feel of the print accents the unpretentious warm, pine furniture. Chasing Butterflies will lighten the room and bring you all the privacy without compromising on the light coming in.

Accessorize with butterfly prints and colorful accessories for more fun and cheer.
