Ask the Designer – help me decide on a bedspread!

Saffron Marigold - Updated: July 1, 2014

Its time to help out a customer with an Ask the Designer post.

One of our customers, Lucy, fell in love with this room – pic below – and is trying to recreate the look in her bedroom. In her own words:

This is a photo of a room that I wanted to copy, in Charleston UK where a group of painters and authors enjoyed each others company starting in 1904 and continuing for 60 years.

And now here are the pictures of her room after painting the furniture and making curtains. She is happy with it but wants a bedspread to match. As she says:

The one in the picture is pale.  I know you probably don’t have this exact bedspread pictured above, but do you have one that compliments the room?

What a pretty bedroom, so feminine and romantic. Its hard to miss the subtle pastel blue and yellow notes in the wall color, the painted furniture and the curtains. She has successfully copied the original room but yet managed to add her own distinct spin and personality to the room.

Option 1: Morning Dew

With the lovely yellow and blue colors that dominate the room, my first choice would be Morning Dew. Patterned in similar colors, Morning Dew has beautiful large motifs in royal blue and teal on a pale yellow ground. Though not as pale as the bedspread on the original image, its pastel colors will lighten the room with a fresh, airy appeal. With tiny flecks of citrus hues, Morning Dew has an exotic vibe, and the brilliance and fastness of color of imported Asian textiles, which were a big attraction for European consumers at the turn of the century and likely the inspiration for the Charleston room.

Here is a quick glance at how a Morning Dew bedspread will complement your room beautifully.

Option 2: Chasing Butterflies

Another option that would work well is Chasing Butterflies. With more of a cheery, happy vibe as opposed to Morning Dew’s elegant feel, this print has the same sky blue and ocher colors that your room is styled after. The milky white ground is paler and whiter than Morning Dew, and the melon and raspberry accents will keep it from looking too pale. A definite contender that will highlight the cozy, cottag-y feel you are trying to create.

Here is how a Chasing Butterflies bedspread could look:

  1. Morning Dew because it didn’t stand out as starkly against the dark wood of her bed. The colors were subdued / restrained.

Chasing Butterflies is more seasonal. If it were on the bed in the dead of winter it would seem strange. It would be great in a more whimsical bedroom.

    • Charles – love your reason for using Morning Dew. Chasing Butterflies IS a fun whimsical pattern. I’m cannot wait to see what Lucy will finally pick……

  2. I think Morning Dew or even (for a splash of a warmer shade) India Rose would look lovely.

    • You’re right Sara! India Rose would be lovely, and its a print I am very partial to.

  3. Dear Kamini,
Such kindness and personal service is not easily found in the retail world these days. I am awed by your swift response and your willingness to share your artistic knowledge. I definitely agree with your first choice–Morning Dew and will place my order now. Thank you for going to the trouble to match our room with your beautiful designs, and thanks to everyone at SaffronMarigold for this wonderful customer support. I also appreciate the comments of Charles and Sarah. You are a step above most e-companies.
    May you be blessed,
    Lucy

  4. Dear Kamini,

Since your so nice about answering questions, I have another question just for fun right now. For a future time:
What do you think about this? My husband wants to bring into the room a simple armchair with antiqued burnished gold velvet seat and back. What about: The bed with Morning Dew Spread and matching pillows and the chair with an India Rose tablecloth thrown over it? Or should I stick with the Morning Dew?

    • Lucy – if you love Morning Dew, then that would be the way to go. But I think you should definitely consider Indian Summer. The orange kissed paisleys would definitely pick up on the citrus notes of Morning Dew, and tossed on the chair, an Indian Summer tablecloth would add beautiful color against the burnished gold seat and back! Good Luck! And do send us more pics. 🙂

  5. Whoops, my last message above is not in proper English and I cannot figure out how to alter it. It should say, “Since you’re so nice” or “since you are so nice…etc.”

    • No worries, I got the gist of what you were trying to say. Thank You.
