Ask the Designer: A table runner to coordinate with navy!

Saffron Marigold - Updated: July 1, 2014

Recently we had a customer, Cheryl, ask us this:

“I  am looking for a tablerunner that would pick up the navy in our dining room/great room. Do both of these table runners have navy in them? Is one more elegant looking than the other? They both seem very pretty online. Thank you!”

Cheryl was referring to Pacific Blue and Midnight Lotus, both prints with navy in their pattern.

Pacific Blue

Midnight Lotus

“Navy” can vary in intensity and can be indigo blue, midnight blue, royal blue, Persian blue or deep blue, so while an “exact” match may be a challenge, either of the two prints will enhance the crisp, classic, fresh appeal of the particular navy you have. While Pacific Blue’s “navy” is more of a classic indigo/navy, Midnight Lotus’s “navy” veers more towards a purple tinged Persian blue.

If the navy you are trying to match falls on the dark blue end of the spectrum, I would suggest Pacific Blue. Do keep in mind that this print has a definite Zen and coastal appeal, and will surely add an organic natural vibe to your table setting. If you do decide on this one, then Heidi’s post on using it in the dining room will inspire you.

If, on the other hand, the navy you are referring to is more of a purple/navy, then Midnight Lotus will be the best choice. With scrolling white lotus blossoms on a deep Persian blue background, its fresh, cheerful print will energize and refresh your dining room! If elegance is what you are looking for, this runner will provide that with its graceful floral print.

I do want to point out our other prints that will work extremely well with navy. Moonlit Taj with its scrolling turquoise, lapis blue and deep green, all on white;  Morning Dew with its large royal blue and teal motifs on pale yellow; and Starry Nights with its crisp white stars against deep indigo are all viable options. The great beauty of block printed linens is their ability to mix and match with each other and still retain their individual gorgeousness!

Don’t forget our other prints that have navy threads running through their print that will work beautifully with navy. From left – Moonlit Taj, Morning Dew and Starry Nights

And if you really want to create a striking unexpected contrast, I must offer this last option of pairing Memories of Shalimar with navy. With floral motifs in navy blue and chocolate, outlined in gold, on a warm meadow green ground, it will add a global flavor and energy to the space. Our Thanksgiving post has great ideas on using this as your table linens.

Cheryl, I know this is a lot to ponder over. But any of the prints above will work well and enhance the navy of your room. Do remember, you can get a swatch if you want to be absolutely sure the colors will match.
